I dreamed this

The Unpierced Coffee Barista

I awake in the predawn. The moon hangs high, but is being shoved away by daybreak. My senses come-to and I’m in motion. It’s a day off, which requires a morning of writing. It also requires coffee, not to work, not wake, but of habit and vice.

I put on beaten jeans and a long-sleeve t-shirt, flip flops and off I go to the coffee house. It’s a peppy place full of energy and light, no beatniks, no smoking, no depression. The staff is drenched in normalcy. White guys with shirts tucked into khakis, management in smiles and not a tattoo in sight. My favorite barista is working.

She is young, and attractive, clumsy and quiet. She attends her post striking the day with necessity. Her moves are far from nimble, her voice a murmur. I study her innocence and remind myself of Nabokov’s troubles.

Tall and dark, much like the robust brew I order. Rich and inviting, warm to the touch. The perfume is alluring and delicate. I take my vice into my hand and slowly place my lips upon it. It overwhelms the senses. Euphoria rushes from stem to receptor, blood heats and pulses quicken.

Her beauty and crooked smile might feed the addiction greater than the caffeine. The drug murders my will and forces a return. The barista simply drags my heart from bed through traffic. Her presence wakes me. My day may begin, chapter one completed. She continues and brightens the next drinker’s soul.

Damn Dirty Apes

There was a headline on Yahoo! News a moment ago that said:

Gorilla scientist says....

I can't remember the rest, but I swear to you my first thoughts were, there are gorilla scientists!

Africa good, Rosanna GREAT

a few thoughts

I found a dead bird this weekend. This is only significant because several blue jays have been found to have West Nile in my neighborhood. Methinks the stray cats made off with the bird meat and some bones for jousting. I am slightly concerned that West Nile will mutate in stray cats to form a strain of super-flu not known to these parts. Besides George Bush doesn't like black people, upon hearing my name is Calvin and I have West Nile Super Duper Flu he'll send Mike Brown to sing Carless Whisper at my mosquito net covered hospital bed in Pass Christian.
I fear that if a cat scratches me I'll be like that dude from Seven, the one with all the scented tree's in his apartment...

I've started carrying hankerchiefs again.

I bought a vomit bucket for Monday's Laguna Beach. I don't think I can stomach Charlton Heston's brother Jason, putting his claws on sweet sweet LC. I figure future female wrestler Alex M. (I think M. the one that isn't Kristen's Ogre) will beat the sugar out of poor LC.

Rosanna by Toto is the definitive pop gem of my weekend. I would fight for one chance to go back in time. I would have either been at Altamont for the Stones, or Topeka '82 for a Toto-Journey double bill. I can see my feathered hair flying in the wind of my black T-Bird, on the way to the show, doing coke, and punching nerds. Sluming in a HoJo trying to cook angel dust in a Mr. Coffee.

That or I'd go back in time and lobby for George Washington not to accept wooden teeth as his only alternative. No I would have put short screws into his tooth sockets allowing for more meat tearing. Wood only allows so much good chewin'.

All I Wanna Do in the Evening is Hold You Tight...Rosanna

Kissing the Lipless

I've been a bad blogger lately. I've considered shuting her down, just not much to talk about.

I'll tell you this though... I saw that Disney sold a butt load of Cinderella DVD's begging the question: Why did they abandon hand drawn animation? Two things here. First it isn't the visual that is the problem. Second Disney screwed themselves by not hiring or retaining the most brilliant minds in animation. Pixar and the rest are more free thinking enviroments, who cares what they pay...I wouldn't want to work in a regimented place like Disney. Second Shakepeare only wrote 36ish plays. He was brilliant but there are only so many stories to be told. Disney's stories have slipped, and were due for a resurgance, but in the meantime don't blame computer generated animation.

I like things like 500 best songs, or 25 greatest baseball players. Lists that spark debates of subjective subject matters. Blender Magazine, a sister magazine of Maxim has dropped a list entitled The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born! I immediately wondered, how do they know when I was born? Well I know I'm not in Maxim's target audience. I laughed at some of the magazine's jokes, but never liked it, infact found myself hating it because of its influence on otherwise more sophisticated magazines. Now pick up a copy of Vanity Fair, its not as good as it was five years ago. Any way so Blender's readers are 25 or less. I think we knew that but until you really read it and see all of the hip hop I remained intrigued. I bought it and began to listen to some of the tunes I didn't recognize or haven't heard in years. Barring any hippity hop I heard some good Pulp, Stone Roses, Belle and Sebastian, and Mudhoney.

I can truly agree that some of these songs are great but please. Please tell me Atomic Dog by George Clinto in not a Greatest 500 of the last 25 years. Snoop likes it, he uses it thrice per album, but please. Tonight I'm gonna look for the Grammy winners for Song, Record, Rock Song, Pop song of the year. That's four songs max per year. Possibility of 100 songs, and see how many are listed. Now don't get me wrong, Don't Worry Be Happy won a Grammy. I don't expect it to be in Blender, but I do expect a song like Graceland, or Tears in Heaven to be represented. Allthough Wind Beneath My Wings swept the top two song categories it won't get listed and thankfully I won't have to read some dufus hipsters take on why it was great.

Not much folks, time to watch some more movies and Arrested Development DVD.

Oh listen to

For British Eyes Only

I don't even know the last time I wrote here. Sorry to myself and anyone who reads this. I've seen next to no good movies lately. Except the September Sessions, pretty good, very short.

Enjoying some of the new TV this season.

Listening to much My Morning Jacket, Ryan Adams, Matt Pond PA, Liz Phair, and well as usual Hall and Oates. Liz Phair's new album is pretty good, but really emotional.

I know this may seem weird but my extremely good eye for talent has landed another beauty. Papa John's Pan Pizza. Looking at it I want to barf, yack, hurl, and blow chunks, but I bet its delish. Papa John's is the best pizza company I have to choose from, so I will have to try this one and will mos def report back.

Finally the fall movies are rolling in. I'm looking forward to North Country which promises an Oscar nomination for something, The Squid and the Whale, or is that backwards?, and of course Elizabethtown. I have a soft spot for Cameron Crowe. He makes the best boy chick flicks, or as GQ calls them Bro-tion pictures....

Musica

What Up?

I have finally heard some good new records. It's been awhile...try the new Ryan Adams, before the next one comes out in Dec. I like this guy from a distance. He's like the type of guy or girl that you know is gonna break your heart, but its better to have loved and lost than to not love at all. I get hurt by him daily now. Jacksonville City Nights is really good.

Next My Morning Jacket released their newest album Z recently. GOOD STUFF. This band is so underrated. I just like jam rock inspired by Neil Young, rather than Jerry Garcia. They have good melodies, and really capture a cool vibe. I think anyone that likes some of the music I talk about here will like them.

Finally though. I watch many hours of Austin City Limits Festival online. Saw some of my favorite bands, including Steve Earle with his wife (who I love) Allison Moorer, Wilco, and some newbies I like such as Arcade Fire, The Decemberist, Ambulance LTD, and Tristan Prettyman. I highly recommend watching the Arcade Fire and Ambulance LTD. Those guys were passed off by your fellow blogger as internet buzz. I like them both live. Good groups a little too different for radio, which is certainly a selling point.
