What Should I Do?

Let me tell you about yesterday:

Martha Stewart was eating out of my garbage again last night. I can't seem to get her trained. I know what you're thinking; Martha Stewart is a bizarre name for a pet, at least that's what I tell Jen. As I sit here guest blogging for i write the words, sucking down nicotine and caffeine, I rest anxious, about the baby and the latest draft for Armageddon 2: Armageddon. Jen's freaking out about "painting the baby's room", but its like I told her, we'll hire some Mexicans or Jason Mewes. Anyway I've been listening to less Aerosmith and more Boston, I don't know...is that lame. Jen says I'd really like Triumph, but Tower doesn't have too many of their discs.

All for now,

Ben

Kicking Television

Friends here are your results from this weeks new TV shows:

Arrested Development was f'in' great... but I'm only concerned with the newbies, just wanted to get that plug in for the funniest stuff on tv.

How I Met Your Mother..B+ I'm into it. I like the premise, I like most of the actors and love Neil Harris's silly Vince Vaughn style guy's guy. Cobie Smulders though is my new crush.

My Name is Earl...- missed it. My cable was on the fritz. Is that how you spell fritz? Anyway I live in the mid 1990's where I have internet, cd's, movies on disc, cordless phones and a cable system based on an analog signal. Please forgive me.

Everyone Hates Chris..A+ Arrested Development has a rival for laughs per minute. Arrested Development is better because its series based as many shows are now. EHC is a standard comedy series where you need very little backstory to get involved, but it is very funny. I know people that lived like that, and I certainly saw some of my childhood in it. Think of the Wonder Years and Good Times. To me that is a combination as good as chicken and waffles.

For the first time I am returning tonight to a series I hated, liked briefly, disliked, fell in love with in reruns, tried to watch again in its current state, didn't like it and then saw a classic episode from last season, and can't miss tonight's season premiere. Of course I'm talking about Girlfriends on UPN. No jackalope, I'm talking West Wing, fooled ya right? Any way I love this show and hate it sometimes too. I still believe I could write a book on behalf of the good years of the series, with only a chapter or two about the sad times.

Anyway, Laguna Beach is about to come on in re-runs I missed this week's due to said cable issue. Have you noticed how much the OC and Laguna are influencing kids fashion. Unbelieveable. Look some time at the Gap, American Eagle..etc. Kids are wearing blazers with jeans and stiped polos.

Cock it and Pull it

Comcast Cable is the devil. I hate me some Comcast. I lost cable on the night of 9-20 it returned 27hrs later. These are only the hours I'm aware of my disservice.

Cobie Smulders is my new #1. As if you couldn't tell I like brunettes.

Is there a good radio song out now? I really dug the new Jack Johnson stuff, Coldplay, U2, Kelly Clarkson....but there are no hits out there I hear over and over that I like. Oh except Fall Out Boy's Sugar We're Goin' Down...

Anyone notice how much charity Americans are involved in now? I'm but 28 years old, so my experience is limited. I'd say that Americans are giving in record numbers not just because the statistics from Katrina vs. 9-11 prove it....because do you remember the tsunami. I bugged out when President Bush gave a very small amount of aid. I wasn't alone, we united and gave in record. It was my first charitible contribution of anything more than a couple of bucks. But it hit me in away I'd never been affected before.

Do you think we all know someone affected by 9-11? Tsunami? or Hurricane Katrina? This isn't a bragging point, but I know someone affected by each. My extended family in New Orleans lost their home and one lost a job considering it was also destroyed. During the tsunami in the pacific I had a college friend taking her holiday for Christmas, that sent pictures...stating only Phuket (Tsunami Photos)...That was weird. Oh and my cousin.... this mofo has seen some stuff lately. He is practicing law now, but previously he followed his wife through her education, Opthamology. Including Nepal, a completely other story...he was evacuated during a political emergency. Previous to Nepal he was a government employee in DC who would call on the Pentagon daily, including of course 9-11-01...It seems strange to me that he hasn't published his memoir yet.

Everybody Hates Chris tonight....

I watched Crash...didn't like it, 21 Grams...didn't like it...no loss.

Arrested Development though was top notch....

Until the next time: Pull out Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band and find Lovely Rita, while you're at it listen to Fixing a Hole...

Hall Call

****This post should have been placed on my sports only blog. I do not have an explanation for this error. If you enjoy posts like these visit www.takingitgamebygame.blogspot.com .****

Dan Patrick started a discussion that I didn't hear but heard the ripples from later today. I often wonder who is in and who is out of the Hall of Fame for a respective sport. Today that discussion came up. I've been wanting to do this for a little while and today we do baseball. Here is why this debate is fun. Andruw Jones hit career HR 300 last night. He's 28. Is he in? Lots say yes, some say not yet....He's close to catching Dave Parker, Gary Carter, Don Baylor and Johnny Mize in HR's and he's got Gold Gloves all over the place. Seems simple...but if it all ended today is he in? Greg Vaughn has more HR's and so do David Justice and Ron Gant...

Who's in and who's out? Some are not yet, meaning if I had my way and the player continues on his current pace he will be in, some are no brainers so they aren't mentioned...

Jeff Bagwell...Yes, barely
Frank Thomas...Yes
Juan Gonzalez...NO
Jim Thome...Not Yet, got to get back to Indian form
Gary Sheffield...Yes
Manny Ramirez...Yes only if it keeps up
Carlos Delgado...Not Yet
Chipper Jones...Not Yet
Jeff Kent...Not Yet
Vladimir Guerrereo...Not Yet
Rafael Palmerio...Yes
Bernie Williams...No
Craig Biggio...Not Yet 400 hits from 3000!
Kenny Lofton...No

Trevor Hoffman...Yes
David Wells...NO
Mike Mussina...No

Let the arguing begin...

Carry Each Other

Kiddies,

What's goin' on...well I've been raving about U2 and Mary J. Blige this weekend performing on Shelter from the Storm. They did a very inspiring version of One. A song I totally got sick of years ago, but came back to when I went through a U2 reniassance. It's really a great song and this version, with a powerful soul singer's influence made it even better. To see it go to:
www.u2exit.com look for the thing that says One with Mary J. Blige.

I've always said U2 is the best Christian band ever, and in this performance you get the essence of humanity and love in Bono's words. Not to go all rock critic on your face...

Also getting into Mr. Show with Bob and Dave. Watching season one on DVD. That show is so absurd. It launched Jack Black, David Cross and Bob Odenkirk into a kind of secret cool comedy group that Black obviously launched out of with hit films. Only time will tell for David Cross's fame. Odenkirk is too happy behind the scenes but I think Cross could still be really big. Well if you count some one like Dave Attell as big. Anyway I'm still looking for the bit about 'Taint Magazine. David Cross is a 'taint model and the photo shoot, as I recall from the mid-nineties, was hilarious.

In other music stuffs: Have I given you some examples of Green Day past and present. If no then read further...if yes then skip this...Listen to 2000 Light Years Away and then Give Me Novocaine/She's a Rebel and do this....

Bands like Staind for instance will find a new niche and exploit it until there be no milk from said teat. Listen to "Its been awhile" and then the new song I think its called "Its been awhile II".
But bands like Pearl Jam have challenged not only themselves but their fans with a more diverse sound...
I'll give you two slow ballads and two arena rockers.

Black then Off He Goes...difference in years is only five years but one is just more sophisticated to me. I think Black will still sell many many records over Off He Goes though.....

Now do a serious B-Side from the early stuff
Why Go one of my two favorite "b-sides" from a great record and now Hail, Hail also a difference of five years, but such a difference.

Don't get me wrong I know Staind has different sounding songs, and Pearl Jam had a hit with Black, Daughter, and Better Man... all essentially the same thing all from three consecutive albums. It's Pavlovian, Pearl Jam though got more and more creative to the detremint of their commercial successes. Lets all hold our breath and see what Staind will do.

T.D. #666

There are a few things that should have never happened. First we shouldn't have allowed Hitler to cross the Rhine. We should have never based our energy needs on one form. We have so many regrets and looking back I think the greatest was allowing the movie Multiplicity to be made.

Other concerns; Hurricane Ophelia is churning in the Atlantic poising herself for a strike late Monday. I'm not skeeered though...Ophelia is the name of that drunk aunt we all have. You know you could kick her ass with a loaf of bread. It's the name of a Natalie Merchant album for christsakes...once they name a storm after a Slayer album or Pantera songs I'll shake. If you want get me worried throw a Hurricane Necrophobic or Tropical Depression Vulger Display of Power.

Closer Now with Light Years to Go

REM only has two perfect albums.

Only two. Reckoning, and Automatic for the People.

Closer the Natalie, Jude, Clive, Julia movie is not really great. I wasn't enthralled. I guess I like Natalie Portman and Jude Law, but they couldn't get me interested. Don't get me wrong I liked about 75% of the first hour. I stop watching if I'm not hooked after 20 minutes. Anytime after that if I get bored or just upset. Today I got bored. I don't like movies that don't have a likeable person. I need a hero, a life figure, a person of hope. This movie had six credited characters, four of which had character names and I liked less than one of them. I know that was the point, but leave it out of my Netflix queue.

Wanna hear how Michael Stipe matured?

Pretty Persuasion and then Find the River.

World on Fire

What can you say about the situation in the Gulf Coast states?

That is the question I keep posing to myself, believing that there is therapy through writing on this site. I could go on and on ad naseum, and still leave some thoughts out, but here are a few.

The obvious are this: Local government and state government were to blame for the lack of evacuation, as was extreme poverty and ignorance. Knowing that portions of your city are below sea level, undereducated and under financed wouldn't you think the Mayor and Governor would forceably evacuate many from their homes. Anyone choosing to stay should be given that right and forgotten about. Imagine that your plate has a steak, baked potato, and a salad. The steak seemingly comprises 33% of your meal, but it doesn't its actually almost 50% as it is larger and more fulfilling to eat. This is what happened in New Orleans to the lower class it got swallowed in water, after not being properly evacuated. Another thing the state government needs to stand responsible for is the security of their state. From "police" looting, and walking off the job to the Nat'l Guard not being deployed as soon as possible.

First the Police. I cannot deal with the way these cops acted. From watching them loot to them leaving the battle as it got tough. My former police chief acted responsibly during Hugo, a Cat 4 hurricane that dismantled the lowcountry of South Carolina especailly in Charleston County. His responsiblity lie with in the city limits, where a direct hit was suspected. From morning to night he was involved, evacuating police families and working the streets.

Second, deploy the National Guard lady!!! I don't get how the news media who were in Pascagula or Baton Rouge or Biloxi can appear in New Orleans. Helicopters? I'll give you that, but I bet many drove in on some semi passable roads. Roads the National Guard should be clearing, and in cities like New Orleans they should be securing, especially with its sorry police history and situation.

The Federal government has failed as well. In the chain of command you must lie some blame on the desk of the President. His job is as delegator of his department heads, those folks in homeland security, especially Michael Chertoff need to shoulder some of the blame as well. If you are not satisfied with the way things are going in New Orleans, step in this isn't about school vouchers. Was Bush's extended vacation not cut short enough? Should his speech in San Diego have been cancelled. No to both. The federal government failed in a portion of the aftermath.

Is there racism involved in the decision making? Yes and no. Yes I believe if this happened in Orange County or West Palm Beach there would be less violence and much less looting. That would have called for less need for armed security prompting quicker response. Is the base of that race, no its wealth. The looters have been predominately black because New Orleans is predominately black and poor. The wealthy are eating canned goods they saved. Unfortunately the poor eat check to check and well it's the last of the month, you figure it out.

No there wasn't racism at play when it came evacuation time. I knew there was a storm, and I would have heeded my government's request even if I didn't trust it. I trust weather. Ignorance is not a definition of race. Ignorance is it's own animal. These poor people aren't self starters and did not prepare for such and emergency, but how could you on such meager substance.

I need to quit writing and go to bed, but I leave you temporarily with a few thoughts.

I am more than likely going to seek a federal job in emergency management. I may go back to school if its recommended. I don't think I can offer anything other than my effort, and willingness to help. I can't stand sitting on the sidelines. I might not know 1/100 of what it takes to do any of these folks job, but I can make coffee and phone calls. I can pass out water.

I was moved by 9-11, and the Tsunami and now I am moved by this...it consumes me. I don't understand the way my mind works, but I want to be there. I want to cut down trees and rebuild that city. I wanted to go to Sri Lanka and clean up. I need to get involved in these style tragedies or I will feel like I didn't answer a calling.

I don't discuss specifics of what I do to make things better, but I will tell you I have written out several emails, still editing before I send them, to my congresspeople and state law makers, begging them to make our preparedness a priority. I am requesting a few things and offering an idea I had to be drafted into law. My idea, may not be good, but I think its important. So I offer it and hope that each of you who read my blog or are reading for the first time ask your government to make the situation in New Orleans a priority along with your own disaster preparedness.

Biloxi....Jimmy Buffett
World On Fire...Sarah Maclachlanlan...I offered this during the Tsunami, and really just love this song. She doesn't get enough credit. Give Fumbling Towards Ecstacy another try.
