look into this

Well I accomplished something today. I found a website I haven't seen before that I like.

http://thewvsr.com/index.htm

Surf's up

I knew I should have turned left in Albaquerque

I am a confessed news junkie. I have been paying what I would call a moderate amount of attention to the runaway bride story. By moderate I mean I searched the tv and internet for news as needed only maybe three times a day. You should see me during the DC sniper stuff, I sat up at night, waiting, waiting for the next shooting. Ooh that was when I knew I had a problem. The stuff got to me too much. Thanks Al Queda.

Anyway this whole Runaway Bride thing has my noggin swirling around the possibility that this is a giant conspiracy further than just poor little crazy nervous bride. Could her bridesmaids have known that she was gonna take a few days away? I doubt it, but that would make this turn in another different direction. Could she have another relationship she needed to end? I doubt it. Was she depressed and completely freaked out by the gargantuan size of today? Prolly.

Suggested listening for blue states: Ready to Run by the Dixie Chicks, unless you smashed your CD's a few years ago, its funny now that when you look back on it not so many people will admit to being pissed at them. If Cletus the Slackjawed Yokel had said the same about Clinton as we went into Chechneya or Somolia, many would have laughed and agreed.

Moving on I hear they are dropping latin.

Did you know that the new movie Fever Pitch is a remake? I had no clue, I'm not as sharp as I used to be, what with like work being more of a priority now. Yeah Colin Firth was a long suffering Arsenal fan, whatever that means. I'm American where football, means football. I guess the word pitch can have a duel meaning.
In case you don't know Mr. and Mrs. Smith is also a remake. The movie now expected to do major business outside of its target audience, due to its co-stars, Brad and Angelina. This really should get moved up in the release cycle, but I figure there will be some media bombs yet to be dropped to help this one out, as if it needs it. If this one is any good, look for 175 million plus. Doug Liman hasn't made a bad movie so expect it. But anyway, yes a remake of Al Hitchcock's 1941 film. His was a comedy. This one looks tongue in cheek.

I've had two cups of coffee and I need more!!!!!!! AGHHHH! I don't like where this is going.

Anyway have a fun Saturday, its gonna rain here and nothing on my tv, so I guess I'll be watching some Meet the Barkers.

For you Red Staters, Runaway by Del Shannon

Hap this is perfect for your Wedding Album.

Diet Coca Cola and Unlit Cigarettes

Ahhhhh....

Frosty Heineken is sooo good after a night at work. It's 1 in the am and currently I am jamming some Wilco I was jonesing for. Pot Kettle Black has been in my head since near lunch, and now I got a little Ashes of American Flags, a really good song about raking leaves, or maybe terrorism.. you decide. Anyway I'm here to announce that I'm jealous of some of the cities my buddies live in. Like Washington DC, where over the course of the next few weeks you can see bands such as Bloc Party, Audioslave, Stereophonics, Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, Pixies, and Devo. That is all at one venue, the 9:30 Club. Which is a great no frills club. Two bands I didn't mention but would really like to see more than any mentioned above: Ben Folds (sans five, bo urns) and Old 97's, who I like but kinda suck.

Also Myrtle Beach. Many of these acts aren't coming to SC but lots of other junk is going there, for example The Killers and Louis XIV show. That's decent stuff we used to get in Chucktown. We need some serious youth movement here. Jack Johnson is the big thing here and across the country. He is just the only marketable show here in the future. The future still being 4 months away. He plays in September but the ads are as if he was here tomorrow. That of course gives the feel that there won't be crap for four more months. Although for me my week of shows begins again Tuesday with Todd Barry and ends Sat with Paul Westerberg.

For those of you who Rhapsody look into Todd Barry. As a matter of fact I suggest looking around in the comedy sections. Todd Barry is a good thing to start with but get some David Cross, Dave Attell, and a personal favorite from the Blaxploitation Vintage, Rudy Rae Moore aka Dolemite. And you cannot, I mean cannot do Rudy Rae Moore without listening to Stack a Lee. But seriously Lewis Black has some good stuff, I recently got turned on to Mitch Hedburg, who died recently but left us with two great albums.

I haven't left you with any good music lately.

Try this:
Positive Tension....Bloc Party
Banquet...Bloc Party
Cut Your Hair...Pavement--I heard this at the Gap last week, wow the flash back I had was intense
Embassy Row...Pavement
Sowing the Seeds of Love...Tears for Fears
Everybody Wants to Rule the World...Tears for Fears
Galileo...Indigo Girls
Least Complicated...Indigo Girls
Where's Summer B?...Ben Folds Five
Alice Childress...Ben Folds Five

Dawson must be Crushed

Are we becoming too cynical? I know the first thing I thought about this Katie Holmes dating Tom Cruise thing was, that it times itself well for a little extra pub for their competing summer blockbusters. Break up will be Octoberish.

You'll Find Out After the Break

You cannot forget I am an American Idol expert. And I figure I need to explain what happened to Constantine. Oh crap Stacked is coming on let me get up an change the channel.... Sweet! Summer of George is on.

As an Idol expert I can say these things and you should accept them as truths.

Every year there is an upset. i.e. Latoya London, Tamyra Grey.
Constantine became a victim of peaking too early.
Constantine also became a victim of the media, he was spoofed all week in many different ways from the Best Week Ever to people on the internet.
Constantine did a Nickelback song. Everyone hates hockey and Nickelback.
I don't think it helped his cause to show that Fredo was his brother. EEK, I was like scared by his embalmer for a brother, and I basically have the brain of the 14 year old voter.
Finally much like last year where Hawaiian Velasco (wasn't that her name?) upset Latoya, Anthony has the Ukraine Mafia running Idol. Windpipe Trachehole, as I like to call him might poison Bo with Ricin soon.

Serenity Now.

What's It All About?

So I was thinking today what job I would like to have if I ever went to prison. I'm still not sure, but I was not set on being a butcher, baker or candlestick maker... those all seem to entail labor. I also don't want to do the laundry cause that's "woman's work", plus who'd want to wash soiled prison sheets, we've seen Oz. So I would take up the skill of barber. Yep I'd be masculine enough to be barber and really that isn't hard labor. Its better than yard cleaning duty. It's much better than being the librarian.

I watched Alfie (2004) last night. I liked it, but its one of those you just rent. I like to think there are phrases that go with my four star rankings.
( ) no way in hell
* ugh, maybe we can rent it
** that wasn't bad, and I'll probably rent that cause maybe on a second look...
*** now that was pretty good, I'll maybe buy that one day on sale
**** dude. I'm gonna have to buy that, you wanna go and see it again?

Alfie ** 1/2 Not bad I liked how it was made and really liked Jude Law. It wasn't the total laugh fest I had hoped and wasn't prepared for its dramatic arc, having not seen Michael Caine's version. Good stuff though, he is pretty charismatic and very good looking. I had only seen him as the gay mechanic Jim Williams killed in Georgia.

I will seek Jude Law movies out again, but not necessarily this one. I'm looking forward to his re-make of All the Kings Men.

Idol tonight, who ya got?
Vonzell is my current #1, but I'm pulling for her like third or fourth.
I just heard Workin' for the Weekend by Loverboy and it made me think of Constantine. I'm just sayin'.

Bleeding Heart Pinko Commie

I really don't identify myself as a liberal, but over the course of the last twenty four hours a few conversations, bumper stickers and things on TV have got me feeling like I must be more liberal than I thought. I was once called a liberal by an adult in a very rude way. I was one of eight at dinner and the only one that supported an assault rifle ban as I recall, which may have been a bad opinion looking back on it, but I was young. Moving on. I was called a pinko commie at dinner by a guy I just met. I laughed it off and realized I might be in the minority occasionally when having dinner with people in the south. I also found out that diminutive UGA fans are closeted devil worshiping animal rapists. So here is how my day went.

The conversation: I was joking with a co-worker who happens to be conservative. He is on a diet and has an ab-lounger. That in its own right is pretty funny, but I suggested finding some Jane Fonda workout video's to give him some stimuli. He is also a little hard up for some sexual attention, this was intended to create a double entendre. His response was that Jane Fonda was on Inside the Actor's Studio last night. I liked Inside the Actor's Studio before it was a hit and they began having J. Lo, and Ben Affleck, and people who don't know craft from craft services. But the way he described Inside the Actor's Studio did it for me. He said and I quote, "She was on that liberal show Inside the Actor's Studio on that liberal ass Bravo." Now don't get me wrong here. I know Bravo supports the arts and ultimately alternative lifestyles in general. But I didn't see it as liberal. I just thought it was a channel about art and culture. Two things I generally support. I don't turn the channel to the Outdoor Life channel and see duck hunting and think, damn Republicans. I think hmm, I ain't watchin' no dang huntin'.

Next example. I almost keyed a car an hour ago. I went to my local Atlanta Bread Company, which I love. Is that liberal, they sell coffee and bread, some of the employees might oppose the world bank? Anyway, I leave and see a bumper sticker I've never seen before. I look and double take. It says Al Queda <3 Kerry. Oh yes I'm sure that's accurate. Al Queda shows Kerry speaches at recruiting meetings. See that Ali Akbar, John Kerry just said American ports should be made easier targets, and there John Kerry threw a brick at a woman he saw reading. Al Queda likes John Kerry because he doesn't care about the female vote. I had to be restrained, maybe as much because the licence plate had a Clemson border.

Final Example is a story on CBS news tomorrow night. Now I do know that CBS and other media outlets shade on the liberal side. I'm not blind. Do I watch the news to get the headlines spun by a liberal media, no. Anyway they have a report tomorrow about books being banned. No book should ever be banned first and foremost. This infuriates me. Trust me this is a conservative initiative no one can argue that. The only way a book should be censored is by its editor or publisher by turning it down. If I owned a publishing company I wouldn't publish a book on how to molest and exploit children on the black market in exchange for octopus ink. Simply wouldn't be a good investment. The stuff they want to ban might as well be burned in townsquare. While they burn Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller and JD Salinger, I figure they should throw the Koran on the fire and please don't forget anything to do with monkeys.

Weekend Update

Back with very little to rap about.

Check this out. The Japanese horror genre may have a rival in the import department, with the Ruskies. Horror is getting really elaborate. The J-Horror of the last few years has been a nice jumpstart for horror, but sometimes I worry that people try to make something for cult's sake.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/night_watch/

I went to a redneck club this weekend. How's this for irony? I couldn't get in for wearing sandles, but cut off denim shorts are okay. Anyway turns out hispanics and rednecks like Chingy and Ja Rule also.

that's all folks

And the winner is....

My list of 90's Underrated Movies goes as follows: (sure I forgot some)

Get Shorty
Gross Pointe Blank
Pleasentville
Wonder Boys
Go
Elizabeth
Shakespeare in Love (it won for best picture and people don't think it deserves it, it does)
The Thin Red Line
The Virgin Suicides
Out of Sight ( at the time of the release no one knew who J-Lo was, George Clooney was kind of becoming popular, and Steven Soderburgh was a nobody)
Beautiful Girls
Varsity Blues
Clueless
Ice Storm
Waiting for Guffman
Seven

If you've missed some of these, go out and buy or rent them. I guarantee joy. I will refund any dissatisfied customers.

Few of the Overrated
American Beauty
Saving Private Ryan
Titanic
American Pie
Jurrasic Park

I liked all of the above and only missed Titanic in its inital release. But enjoyed it on video. Just thought these movies got more press than deserved especially after multiple viewings. American Beauty falls apart after four plus viewings.

Speed of Sound, Coldplay...pretty good
At Last, Etta James
Outfit, Drive By Truckers
Lick it Up, Kiss

Update on Current Events

American Idol was just ahiiiyght last night. There is no Fantasia, or Rueben this season and that's just killing it. These seven would be runners up in two of the last three seasons, I only watch to see how hot Carrie will be and how old Constantine will look this week, oh and how thin can Scott shave his jaw beard.

Standings as of 4-20
1. Constantine
2. Vonzell-she's gonna win, she's pretty and is peaking
3. Carrie-slipping, but not in my heart...
4. Bo
5. Anwar- I had high hopes
6. Windpipe Trachhole
7. Scott Savoy

Viva il Papa

Now that we have a new Pope, I figure I'll follow him closer than I did John Paul II. To watch his leadership from begining to end will be fascinating. I need to research how the names are placed on each Pope. Like why Benedict XVI? Why not John the whatever number John we're on? Everybody knew it would be Ratzinger, but now who gets the nomination for Dean of the College of Cardinals and will that start being the inside track to the papacy? These are the questions I'll be reading about tomorrow.

It might be interesting to see how truly great, (not liberal, but worldly) John Paul II was when we begin seeing how fundamental Benedict XVI can be. I believe I read somewhere that he was forced to be a Hitler Youth. That is crazy, he went to de-nazification school. Awesome. You don't talk about that kind of stuff everyday.

Pop Secret

Do you think Anton La Vey has Devil's Food Cake for his birthday every year?

I remember a time where Star Wars was like my favorite thing in the world, now I hope the movie never even comes out. Its going to be another disappointment for something I once held so dear. Somehow I've got to find a way to still love the franchise without looking back with mixed feelings.

The Simpsons was pretty funny last night, and Arrested Development was classic finale schtick. They left a lot lingering for closure, hopefully we'll get what we deserve. Maybe my favorite line was when discussing what was under the house "a bunch of blue paint and some denim shreds" or whatever it was. Good grief I hope we'll see a couple more years.

I really want to listen to Abbey Road, I was thinking about the music I listened to in high school (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, REM, Neil Young, Pavement, Uncle Tupelo, Dr. Dre, Beastie Boys, Snoop, The Doors) and the stuff I liked in college (Dave Matthews, Wilco, Son Volt, Jayhawks, Ben Folds, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello, Beck, some punk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Beach Boys and probably most important to me the Beatles). The Beatles were an obsession for probably two years, and I miss listening to my Beatles records, literally, they were vinyl. My favorite is still Magical Mystery Tour, but I want to hear Abbey Road right now.

If you've got a Beatles CD since Rhapsody, iTunes and the like aren't able to get their work then jam some:

I've Made a Horrible Mistake

What's the haps?

I've been missing the daily updates pretty badly. So I need to make up for it with a confession first: Dikembe Mutumbo and I are writing a movie adaptation of the TV show Simon and Simon. Don't think about stealing the idea were attached with Lifetime.

So I've been thinking about corporate sponsorship a bunch lately. I decided I would never accept any endorsement money from WalMart, Starbucks, Fleet Enema, Bag O Glass, or Subway. I would however welcome sponsorship, not for this website, but just for the life I lead from nearly anyone else especially Burger King "It's a wonderful restaurant!"

I went to Hilton Head yesterday to watch some golf, have some drinks and absorb some sun. I did all three, but can only prove one. I got a little cooked, I figure I'll peel by Thursday.
Pastels are more in than I thought. I figured they were a little bit in, but they are in must have territory.

Make sure you watch Arrested Development tonight, season finale, hopefully not the series finale. One of these days a show like Arrested Development will take my idea and run with it. The idea is to put out your current season on DVD with, wait for it, the final episode in the set, with a game. Like get season two today and watch Sunday to see if your gamepiece matches, you could win a guest roll on Arrested Development.

Excuse Me Mr.

Urgh!!!

I crapped out a new message to my peeps only to have blogger destroy it, in a page not found type scenario.

So we'll try this again today, different topic.

Ben Harper rules. I was bored with what I had been listening to, heard some Jack Johnson and thought, I need some good summer music, why not Ben Harper. I am rocking Amen Omen from the Hollywood Bowl presently. He's got a good band and can kill a weisenborn guitar with the best of them.

I finally bought Bright Eyes Its Morning, I'm Wide Awake. I liked it upon my first listen, but wanted to hear it again. That's my new thing is these indie folk people like Conor Oberst, Elliott Smith, Jem, Josh Rouse, Beth Orton, and Nick Drake.

Short post, need to relieve some stress, so its nap time.

Oops...

Finally some gossip page news!!!! Spederline is gonna have a baby. Britney Spears is pregnant. Thus marking the final nail in the career coffin. I couldn't be happier, internet fodder for probably six to eight more months and then for about a week after the baby. I predict Princess for a girl and Dakota for a boy. And if its twins Michael and Janet have a good sound.

Speaking of crazy, tonight on the all new I Want a Famous Face, a dude wants to look like Arnold Swarzenegger (screw you, you can't spell it either). That is what we in the business call good watchin'!

The Sun is not Yellow, It's Chicken

Not much to say:

Suggested listening: Kaiser Chiefs- I Predict a Riot
The Pixies- Here Comes Your Man

Zach Braff better be careful not to become the next Vince Vaughn.

You ever catch those Willford Brimley commercials for Liberty Medical? Who taught him how to say (die- uh- beat- ees)? He says (die-uh-beat-us). That annoys me deeply. I really feel bad for the horse, and that's unusual for me. That horse is carrying like four stones, and three slugs.

"mama's in the factory, she ain't got no shoes/daddy's in the alley, he's lookin' for food/i'm in the kitchen with the tombstone blues"

The Tennessee Two

A tradition unlike any other, The Masters on CBS. I love The Masters, and this year provided another great tourney. As a Rick Woods fan I was okay with his victory. The only reason I wasn't elated was, I really like Chris DiMarco, and had ten bucks on him. My favorite part about the Masters is really gay. I like just looking at the course, the really green grass and the southern tradition. It blows my mind yearly that that course is one hundred miles from where I sleep. It looks like a foreign place you'd see in a travel guide.

I am really listening to a bunch of Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen right now. I a reverting back to the Sun stuff for Cash and Nebraska from the Boss. Looking forward to Devils and Dust, Springsteen's new acoustic set coming out in a few weeks. Title track is really good.

Elisha Cuthbert or Jessica Alba?

Burning in my Hands

Folks,
Friggin' Blogger.com was crap the last two days. I had things to say then that mean so much less now. I'm miffed. Anyway in a past blog that doesn't exist anymore I waxed poetic about Ellen Degeneres and how her show is my 60 seconds of zen a day. I enjoy watching her dance to disco music with her white bread crowd.

My favorite show in reruns right now, Yes, Dear., had one of my favorited bits on last night. They rearranged their living room. The living room is set A. Sorta like Cosby Show set, or All in the Family with the couch or recliners facing the studio audience. Well Yes Dear did an episode with the couch reversed. It was the weirdest sight gag in tv. I really like the creativity that show gives TBS's comedy afternoons.

Tift Merritt tomorrow night. Should be good times. I really want this to be good but am worried it will kinda blow. I hope she checks any pretensions at the door. As always I'll let you know.

Tony Rocky Horror

These deals where you can buy DVD's from Best Buy or Circuit City for like $10 each rule. That's how I propagate my collection. Every other week there is a pretty good deal like a 3 for $30. So today I jumped on Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol. 1&2. I guess I was in a violent mood.

Pulp Fiction, I haven't seen in probably five or six years, but I have seen it like fifteen times. It's one of those movies I watched so much in college, and kind of vowed not to watch for a really long time so I can appreciate it again. Obviously influential, gave a cred to the indie system (which has subsequently died), revitalized the noir (ultimately creating a neo-noir genre) and made soundtracks cool again. But does it hold up? The short answer is not really. Maybe I haven't given it enough time, maybe my film knowledge and appreciation has grown to recognize its flaws. I doubt either are true, I think I've seen so many rip offs that I can't place myself in a position to realize that this was the first movie to use the vulgarities, violence and comedy to carry its story. I hate to act like it is overrated, because it isn't. It's still rather entertaining, just no where near as tense.

Movies I have on suspension: Rudy, American Beauty, and The Usual Suspects. I want Rudy to be okay again. Never been a favorite, but still fun. I can't stand the sight of it now, way too much exposure. American Beauty, is crap. I can't watch it anymore. I want to enjoy it the way I did the first time, but I cannot. The Usual Suspects is one of my favorite Kevin Pollack and Chaz Palmentari movies, but I don't want to watch it for a long time. I want to go back to it and appreciate the surprise. That might be a feat in absolute futility, but I've got to try. I want to hear Verbal tell the story one more time. I'm good at figuring movies out, I got the Sixth Sense in like thirty minutes, but this one made my jaw drop. I'll still never forget the coffee mug hitting the ground, my eyes popped out of my head during that sequence. I really should add Jaws to that list. I love the early Speilberg stuff and Jaws is my favorite. I can watch it every time its on TV, and still love it. But maybe if I put a hold on it, I can enjoy it that much more.

This is so my favorite week in sports. We get men's basketball championship, Opening Day baseball, and The Masters...my second favorite golf tournament, but a local one that drives southerners wild.

Smashing Pumpkins just got added to Rhapsody.
Cherub Rock, I am One, Ava Adore, 1979.... you'll be happy you did.

Dyslexic Heart

Is anyone gambling on what continent the new Pope will be from. I am going with South America. I just have a feeling, Honduras has a good candidate I understand. I'm gonna pull for him.

It still has me a little freaked out that I was in a Catholic Church when the Pope was pronounced dead. Well technically I could have been in a car, or walking to the church, but I was there for that like first hour after his passing. Let's add this to the weird or eerie file, bride and groom are headed for a Rome honeymoon. Really good wedding ceremony, and reception. No offense to any of my buddies that did this, but I'm not a unity candle guy. This is a little too Survivor for me.

Okay, so its basketball time again. I'm looking forward to tonights game, more that any National Championship in a while. Probably because the collection of talent is so deep, and both coaches are going for their first title. Weber has hardly coached big time basketball, where Williams has been the favorite before on multiple occasions only coming up empty everytime. No predictions here, not rooting for anyone as I write this. I figure I'll throw some allegience to someone as the game gets going.

Brendan Benson was just added to Rhapsody. His new album is pretty good. I'm into the whole power pop thing.

I need to go see Sin City, and The Upside of Anger this week. Also, I finished West Wing II, so I need to go buy III.

Baseball starts today, I've got the Marlins and Angels in the World Series.

If you're interested, Paul Westerberg will be in Charleston in May.

Looking for My Fourth Pope

Interesting Pope facts:

Pope Eugenius III decreed a second Thursday in a week.

Pope Benedict IV was believed to be between 12 and 20 beginning his papacy.

Julius Caesar allowed for the invention of a leap year, with Pope Gregory XIII accepting it after eliminating ten days jumping from Oct 4th to the 15th. Ultimately converting the Christian world from a Julian to Gregorian calendar, the one we use today.

I have long been ignorant about the Pope and his history, but the day I wondered how a leap year was created and that the Pope was involved impressed me forever. I will be watching the order of events over the next thirty days very closely. History before our eyes.

As of this publishing, Sinead O' Connor has not torn up any pictures of speculative Popes.

Rainy Days and Mondays

Since we last met my beloved Gamecocks won the NIT. The truth of the matter is, that I really was down on this team mid Feb. I mean so down I didn't read articles, follow games or even know when games were played. For me this is unusual. I know when Cal Berkley's next game is most of the time. But Congrats to Dave Odom, Carlos Powell, Josh Gonner, John Chappell, and Jon Land. The senior class is light but had been through quite a bit of games.

So I hiked the Cooper River Bridge for the final time. The race will be on the Ravenel Bridge next year. All in all it was a rewarding experience. We probably got an inch of rain from the time I got up to the time the race started. It was wet and windy, but great athletes choose not their conditions. I finished in one hour and like ten to fifteen minutes. Good time. I hinted at reretirement* after next years run, but this is something I will try and do many more times.
The only celebrity sighting was, and I can't guarantee this but he was running with another man: Bunky from Big Brother 1,2,or 3 I can't for the life of Marcellus remember.

Best thing I've heard this year: Stereophonics New Album. They make me feel good.

Final Four predictions. Illinois vs. Michigan St.
Women's LSU and UT.....All SEC vs. All Big Ten

Most sports fans that are outside these conferences hate these conferences.

*For those of you who don't know I retired from competitive athletics near three years ago. Following utter exhaustion in a basketball game, I held an impromptu presser and left it all on the field. I do still play golf and swim when I'm in water, oh and I've also been known to throw a football for fun, but never do I ever keep score when I shoot trash into a trash can.
